Qeparo Castle: A Fortress Steeped in History Guide
Perched high above the Ionian Sea, Qeparo Castle offers breathtaking panoramic views and a glimpse into Albania's rich past. This historic fortress, located near the village of Qeparo, is a must-see for history buffs and anyone seeking stunning coastal scenery. Explore the remnants of a bygone era and imagine life within its ancient walls. Qeparo Castle's history stretches back centuries, with evidence suggesting Illyrian origins. It was later fortified and used by various powers, including the Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. The castle served as a strategic defensive point, controlling the coastal route and protecting the surrounding area from invaders. Over time, it evolved, with different architectural styles reflecting the influence of its successive occupants. Visitors can explore the castle ruins, wander through the crumbling walls, and soak in the spectacular views of the coastline. The climb to the castle is moderately challenging but well worth the effort. While there are no formal guided tours, the site is easily accessible and allows for independent exploration. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially during the warmer months. While in Qeparo, be sure to sample the local olive oil, a staple of the region's culinary tradition.
Transportation
Reaching Qeparo Castle requires a bit of effort. From the main coastal road (SH8), you'll need to take a smaller road leading up towards the old village of Qeparo. From there, it's a walk uphill to the castle itself. Local buses connect Qeparo with other towns along the coast, such as Himarë and Borsh. From Sarandë, you can take a bus towards Himarë and ask to be dropped off at Qeparo. Be prepared for a steep walk.
